List ALL files (including invisible ones) from mac terminal and finder

December 12, 2012

First for the Terminal:

ls -a

The convention is that filenames that start with a dot (e.g. .gitconfig) will be invisible from both the Finder and when using ls in Terminal, unless you use -a.

To make Finder show you all the files (including invisible ones), enter this into a Terminal command line:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
