Simple way to get latex / bibtex to display citations and bibliographies in formats somewhat familiar to ecologists

September 15, 2012

Put this in the preamble,

\usepackage{natbib}
\bibliographystyle{plainnat}
\bibpunct{(}{)}{,}{a}{}{;}

If you come to this post after having tried something else, its probably best to start fresh by deleting any aux files etc.

EDIT: please note that this only gets you close to something that ecologists will want. One problem is that the year comes at the end in the references. However, to get the year where you want it takes using a different bst file from the ones that come standard with natbib.
